Melbourne Super Kings Win 10th Asia Escape Phuket International Cricket Sixes

New tournament venue is a hit with the teams

The Melbourne Super Kings were crowned Cup champions at the 10th annual Asia Escape Phuket International Cricket Sixes following a brutal demolition of defending champions MG7 from Kuwait in the Cup final. In other tournament divisions there was silverware for MG Warriors in the Bowl, Phuket Cricket Group in the Plate and Lamma CC in the Spoon.

Eighteen teams from around the world have been competing in glorious sunshine over the last four days at the new Alan Cooke Ground in Phuket, Thailand in the ICC award winning, Asia Escape Phuket International Cricket Sixes. All teams played on Finals day of the six-a-side cricket competition, and some incredible cricket skills were firmly in evidence at the picturesque venue.

The Spoon final was an all Hong Kong duel between experienced sixes campaigners, Lamma CC, and the hot shot team of the Hong Kong Cricket Festival, the Hong Kong Blues. Batting first, despite a ferociously quick first over, Lamma put on a score of 68 without loss. They drew on all of their many years of accumulated cricket wisdom to defend their total and the Blues fell short of the target, Lamma taking the Spoon in Phuket for the first time. Mark "Monty" Burns was presented with the 'Player of the Final' award for his 25 not out and 1 wicket for 7 runs.

The Plate final proved a popular win for the local players of the Phuket Cricket Group who had played hard competitive cricket throughout the tournament and defeated Pinjarra from Australia in the Plate final. David Watson was made Player of the Final for his 33 not out and 1 wicket for 5 runs from his over.

Mahmood again arranged for two teams from Kuwait to fly in to Phuket and compete at the Sixes, and both sides reach finals. Up first were the MG Warriors who played Southern Stars from Victoria, Australia in the Bowl final. Both teams had been going great guns throughout the tournament and featured match winning players. In the end the Kuwaitis deservedly triumphed after a controlled bowling display restricted the Aussies to a modest 57 runs which MG Warriors knocked off relatively comfortably led by some breezy shots from Johnny, for a popular victory. Mitch Younger of the Stars picked up the Player of the Final award for his performance of 23 not out and 11 runs from his over.

The other Kuwaiti side in the tournament, defending champions MG7, scored a fantastic victory over the CBB Wolfpack in the Cup semi final when they bludgeoned and defended 98 off the fancied Australian side featuring Aussie international indoor cricketer, Will 'Alter Boy' Badger, to send them into the Cup final. They were up against the Melbourne Super Kings making their debut at the Phuket Sixes. The Aussie outfit batted first and devastated the Kuwaiti bowling attack, racking up 98 runs which they then capably defended despite the best efforts of MG7. It was a classy match full of top drawer shots and power bowling, and Melbourne were good for their Cup victory. Player of the Final was awarded to Ramesh of the Super Kings.

Mark Stirling of the Wild Men From Borneo, who featured two sides in the tournament and the largest shot box ever seen, was awarded the prestigious Spirit of Cricket Award.

A fantastic awards dinner 'under the stars' was held for all teams and officials at the fabulous Kata Beach Resort.

Four days of cricket style 'fun in the sun' was played and enjoyed for the first time at the fabulous Alan Cooke Ground in Phuket. The ground features a great clubhouse with changing and shower facilities, a bar and a good quality outfield. Both the teams and the tournament organisers, the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour, were appreciative of the opportunity to play the Phuket Sixes, now in its 10th year, at the ACG.

In fond remembrance of former umpire Martin Flynn -

'Hi

I'm Gill Flynn, daughter of Martin Flynn who has umpired at Chiang Mai on occasion. I wanted to let you know the sad news that my Dad was diagnosed with cancer in February and his health declined very rapidly thereafter. He passed away on 15th April at home with all his family present. There was an obituary in the local papers here and on the Carlton Cricket Club website. I know he thoroughly enjoyed umpiring in Thailand and indeed he was umpiring in Scotland only last summer. He was 82.

Best Regards

Gill'

'Dear Gill,

Thanks very much for your e-mail. I am most sad to hear of the passing of Martin, a man who I always got along well with. He was a man with passion for life and for cricket.

I am sure that he will be both missed a lot within Carlton CC and Scottish cricket generally.

All of my very best to you, all the family friends and cricket contacts on behalf of the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour (ACST). www.cricketsi

2013 Phuket International Cricket Sixes to move venue

The ACST 2013 Phuket International Cricket Sixes, to be staged from 18-21 April 2013, has a new venue.

It will be played at the Alan Cooke Ground (ACG), north of Phuket Town and not Karon Stadium as originally intended as the ASCT has been told the venue is no longer available.

The ACG is a world-class venue that has been used for international matches by well-known clubs such as the Marylebone and Singapore Cricket Clubs.

The facilities are excellent and the two-storey pavilion contains changing rooms and showers on the ground floor, plus a restaurant, bar, cable TV, wi-fi and a superb viewing gallery.

The ground’s artificial wicket is of the highest quality and the feedback from the players who are currently competing in the ACST’s Kata Group International Cricket 7s has been positive.

ACST apologies for the change of venue and the additional travelling time that will be required, however can reassure you that you will enjoy the ACG’s beautiful setting and first-class facilities.

We would like to thank Alan Cooke and the Phuket Cricket Group for their valuable assistance in securing this new venue and we look forward to a successful 2013 Phuket International Cricket Sixes competition.

A full briefing will be provided at the captains and officials meeting.

Welcome to the website of the ICC award winning

Phuket International Cricket Sixes!

The ICC award winning Phuket International Cricket Sixes was first staged in 2004 and features up to 28 teams, plus supporters and officials from around the world. The tournament is the flagship event of 'ACST Phuket Cricket Week' and will be played at the

Alan Cooke Cricket and Sports Ground

(ACG) for the first time in 2013. Facilities at the ground are excellent, including a cricket pavillion and a bar!

In addition to the cricket action on the field there's plenty of excitement off the field, including beach cricket and gatherings after the matches.

The motto of the Phuket Sixes is 'fun in the sun' and this tournament really is one of the most enjoyable cricket tours you could possibly experience, all taking place on the paradise island of Phuket.

Join in the fun at the Phuket International Cricket Sixes!
