Phuket Invitational Cricket Sixes 2004

The inaugural American Express Private Bank Phuket Invitational Cricket Sixes 2004 lived up to it's billing of ‘Fun in the Sun’ at the Karon Stadium in Phuket, both on and off the field.

A powerful Surrey Vagrants side featuring former Essex captain Paul Pritchard saw off the challenge of Trevor Chappell's Moonshine Warathais from New South Wales to take the first Phuket Sixes Cup title. Pritchard put in excellent performances over the three days and was awarded the Player of the Tournament (Open).

In a noisy Bowl final, Lamma CC of Hong Kong defeated a spirited Green Man Sweepers side, just managing to defend their 89 against some powerful Green Man hitting and barracking from the Green Man supporters! Local teachers from Dulwich College stormed off with the Spoon title defeating the surpise package Blythswood Beckhams from England in the final. The start of the final day’s play was delayed due to overnight rain. But with a fair amount of effort and no little ingenuity, the coconut matting wicket was made ready with a minimal effect on the schedule.

“We’ve had really positive feedback from the teams about this first Phuket Cricket Sixes,” said Tournament Director Doug Hedley. “Phuket has all the ingredients as a superb location for a Sixes tournament. We’ve had three days of enjoyable cricket, our sponsors are happy and hopefully now we’ve helped to put cricket on the map in Phuket. We really appreciate the support we received from the Thailand Cricket League, the Governor of Phuket and we’re also grateful to Dr Paes of the Asian Cricket Council who played in the competition. There now seems to be a groundswell of support for growing local cricket in Phuket and that’s fantastic to see. We’re looking forward now to building on the success of this first Phuket Sixes as we prepare for the 2005 tournament.”

The Phuket Invitational Cricket Sixes was well attended by overseas team with nine of the twelve participating sides flying in to Phuket from India, Pakistan, UK, Australia and Hong Kong to take part.
