Phuket International Cricket Sixes 2009

Please be advised that the 6th annual Phuket International Cricket Sixes gets underway next week from 15th April 2009 at Karon Beach, Phuket.

Entertainment Events

15.4 - The warm up event for the Sixes is Kenny Jackson’s Beach Cricket Championship from 2.30pm on Wednesday 15th April at Karon Beach (in front of Karon Sea Sands Resort). This will provide a good opportunity for pre-event comments from players and officials and an excellent photo opportunity in a fun atmosphere with tropical beach surroundings.

16.4 - The Sixes Welcome Reception is attended by all the teams, officials and tournament sponsors and takes place in the gardens of The Green Man on Thursday 16th from 7.30pm. This picturesque function provides a good opportunity for social photos, post first day comments and the chance to speak with Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan MBE the only person to receive the MBE award from the Queen of England for after dinner speaking.

19.4 - The Sixes Gala Awards Dinner, with guest speaker Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan MBE. Attended by all teams, officials and sponsors, including star players Trevor Chappell (ex-Australia) and Kenny Jackson (South Africa) this is the biggest social function of the Phuket Sixes and taking place for the first time at the luxurious Movenpick Karon Resort Ballroom. Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan MBE will be the main speaker. Entry is by invitation only for guests, media please contact Mark Burns in advance to arrange attendance.

The Tournament

The tournament matches commence on Thursday 16th April at Karon Stadium and take place daily from 9am - 5pm, including Finals day on Sunday 19th. Action is fast and furious and all media are welcome to capture the excitement. There are four competitions: Cup, Plate, Bowl, Spoon.

Results and summaries of the days action will be sent out daily.

All media are welcome to cover the tournament, with advance accreditation.

The Spoon final also saw a decisive victory for Guwahati Town from Assam, India over newcomers the Black Swans from Australia. Guwahati posted a hefty 88 runs in their innings which the Swans fell well short of with their 49 runs in reply.

It was a fantastic week’s cricket in Phuket at the ‘Sixes by the Sea’, in wonderful surroundings and played in the best traditions of the Spirit of Cricket. Following the close of play all of the 23 teams and 30 VIPs and officials attended a sumptuous Gala Awards Dinner at the Hilton Arcadia Hotel.

Overview: Staged at Karon Stadium next to Phuket’s beautiful Karon Beach, the Phuket International Cricket Sixes has to be one of the most exotic locations in the world to play cricket. Winner of a global award from the International Cricket Council in 2005 the tournament annually attracts up to 28 cricket teams plus officials and supporters from all around the world to enjoy ‘Fun in the Sun’ where the spirit, camaraderie and off field hospitality are as keen as the on field action. Star players who have competed at the event include Adam Hollioake, Trevor Chappell, Pranab Roy, Atul Wassan, Kenny Jackson and Alan Mullally. Now in it’s sixth year the Phuket Sixes generates funds for local cricket development and charities and is a premier event on the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour annual calendar.
