Aussie sides looking ominously strong on Day One of the Montpelier Phuket International Cricket Sixes 2007

Players and spectators basked in glorious sunshine on Day One of the Montpelier Phuket International Cricket Sixes and were treated to an awesome days cricket at the Karon Stadium.

Nineteen teams are competing in this fourth annual Phuket Sixes being played on a wonderful, lush new outfield at Karon Stadium next to Karon Beach.

Match 1 was an India versus Pakistan encounter as former Phuket Sixes champions Corner Tigers took on Guwahati Town from Assam. Facing tight bowling from the Tigers from Pakistan, Guwahati notched up a modest 56 runs for 1 wicket with Sajjad Hussain scoring 28 not out. The Corner Tigers lost 3 wickets in the chase, but won the match comfortably.

Australian touring sides Joondalup Kinross Wolves and Leeming Spartans made perfect starts to their challenges for the title as both posted two wins from their two matches today.

Leeming comfortably defeated Phuket Sixes regulars the Wild Men from Borneo and local Phuket side, the Island Cricketeers and had the look of a side capable of challenging for the title.

New to the Phuket Sixes, the Joondalup Kinross Wolves from Western Australia also looked more than handy as they saw off Sunshine CC from India. ‘Hoops’ Hooper retired on 30 as Joondalup scored 66 for 2 wickets. Sunshine mustered 57 runs in reply.

Joondalup also defeated Laguna Phuket in a closely fought match. Beyonce of Joondalup starred with 24 runs and 2 wickets in the match.

Round One matches continue tomorrow until lunchtime, with Pocari CC of Bahrain taking on Kudu Bar Cavalry CC from Malaysia in the first match of the day.

Play starts at 9am and spectators are welcome to come and see the action.

Food and refreshments are available at the ground and entrance is free.
