DAY TWO PLAYED IN TESTING CONDITIONS

The start to the second day of the International Cricket Sixes was delayed following a torrential tropical downpour in the early hours of Friday morning.   After having minimal rain for the past four months, it all came down at once and tested the new drainage system at the Republic Phuket Football Ground.   Start of play was delayed by two and a half hours, and after some creative curating the wicket was prepared and declared fit for play.

With the ground still soggy and the pitch playing a little slow and low, ten matches were completed and the tournament remained on track.

MATCH ONE

MG7 threw down the gauntlet against the SharifallyHuzifers smashing a massive 117 runs in their innings.  Both openers retired on 33no (Usman and Bharat), with Rohen supporting with a solid 25no.  The SharifallyHuzifers could only manage 42 in reply with the loss of 4 wickets, 2 of those being taken by Faisal who completed his over with a very economical 2 for 4.   Top scorer for the Huzifers was once again Curtis ‘Doggie’ Lind, backing up his Day One form with a solid 12.

MATCH TWO

Match 2 was contested between the Wolf Pack and Etihad 2.  The Wolf Pack opened their batting account with some huge sixes from opener Scott ‘Cess’ Maitland, who top scored with 32(ret).  The Pack finished their innings on 1/68.  In reply, Etihad 2 only managed 53 for the loss of 3 wickets – one very tidy caught and bowled from Matt ‘Jenko’ Jennings, Raffil bowled for 2 off Hancox and a run out on the last ball of the over.

MATCH THREE

Etihad 1 took on the Wild Men from Borneo 2 in the third match of Day Two.  Sixes dominated the Etihad 1 innings, with the team compiling 96 runs for the loss of one wicket.  Top scorer Chiraz impressed with his 31 before being run out.  The challenging conditions of the deck did the Wild Men no favours, conceding 33 sundries.  Etihad 1 seemed to relish the conditions, taking 3 of the Wild Men’s wickets, Chiraz taking 2 (Butthead, 2, caught and; Snatch, 0, stumped).  Showing their true mettle, the Wild Men batted through their innings, finishing on 3 for 36.

MATCH FOUR

The deck started to play a significant role in performance come the fourth match of the day, when the MG7 Warriors contested the CBBs.  The Warriors struggled to get going at the start of their innings, losing 3 wickets for not much before Asim took the crease and belted a quick 31 before retiring.  The Warriors finished on 4 for 68, with Imran (2 for 3) taking the prized wickets of Casino (1) and Melwin (1) in the first over of the match.  The CBBs could only manage a reply score of 34 with the loss of 4 wickets, with Lenni taking Warriors bowling honours finishing on 2 for 10.

MATCH FIVE

A bit of maintenance to the wicket helped improve conditions in the contest between the Desa Bangles and Etihad 2.  The Desa Bangles posted 2 for 63 to chalk up their first win of the tournament.  Batting honours went to Kamran (30ret) on a deck that was tricky to read.  Etihad 2 only managed to notch up 32 runs in reply for the loss of four wickets with bowling honours also going to Kamran with a very impressive 3 wickets and a wide conceding the only runs off his over.

MATCH SIX

The Southern Stars started their innings in a blaze of glory with opener Scott McNamara quickly amassing 30 before compulsory retirement.  A controversial LBW decision to Day One impact player Ron Elliott saw the middle order take up the challenge and the Stars completed their innings on 2 for 73.  Set 74 for the win, the SharifallyHuzifers got on with business with openers Mark ‘The Champ’ Genovesi (23no) and Curtis ‘Doggie’ Lind (26no) getting the job done and achieving the total in the fifth over, their score helped along with 25 sundries.

MATCH SEVEN

Scott ‘Cess’ Maitland (30ret) and Matt ‘Jenko’ Jennings (24no) put on a batting clinic in the Wolf Pack’s run chase against the Wild Men from Borneo 1 (Lewy 17no and Ice Pack 16no).  The openers bombed 6 after 6 and scored so quickly the scorers couldn’t keep up with the Pack facing 3 balls more than required, smashing past the required 47 for the win, eventually amassing 58 without the loss of a wicket.

 MATCH EIGHT

Bat 69 struggled to get the momentum going, notching up only 29 runs for the loss of two wickets (Kajara 9, bowled S Mapes; Sahay 11, bowled Singh).  It took the Storm Chasers only 11 balls to chase down the total, finishing on 1 for 31, the wicket of Singh (6) taken by Raja.  Rehman top scored for the Storm Chasers with 13no.

MATCH NINE

MG7 put on another dominant performance to win the match against the Phuket Juniors, but the kids can hold their heads high, having batted through their innings, achieving 3 for 21, and once again performing admirably with the ball claiming 2 wickets (Took 1 for 13; Tae 1 for 11).  Sundries hurt the Juniors, conceding 48 bonus runs to the MG7 total of 97.

MATCH TEN

Mount Compass Bulls batted first and made 38 runs against Etihad 1. Mark Nash batted well and made a good 21 before being bowled by Sohail. Etihad followed up to pass the Mount Compass Score in just over 3 overs.  A good win by Etihad.
