Galah Cricket Club takes early lead in Day One of Kata Group International Cricket 7s

Day one of the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour (ACST) 11th Annual Phuket International Cricket Week 2014 got off to a cracking start at the newly-refurbished Republic Phuket Football Ground today.

The upset of the day was the Galah Cricket Club defeating last year’s Kata Group International Cricket 7s winners Wolfpack, captained by Australian Indoor Cricket Team champion Will Badger, by 15 runs.

Steve Hancox made up for the loss in the Wolfpack’s next game against the Galahs by claiming three wickets with only three runs scored from his over.

In this game he claimed the wicket of the ACST’s and CBB team member Michael Maher for a golden duck.

The Galah Cricket Club continued their winning streak throughout the day’s play, with David Newham showing great form with the bat.

Later the Rowdies, who are made up of Qatar and Emirates airlines employees, dominated in their match against the CBBs. Dhiraj produced a fantastic innings where he scored 32 runs before retiring.

Will Badger, who has also played A-Grade outdoor cricket for 20 years, said the new field was fantastic to play on.

“I love it,” Mr Badger said.

“The surface is very level and the outfield is playing better than many of the grounds I have played on.”

The ACST’s curator Mr Dixie Joy said the cricket ground had been laid with world class grass and was a beautiful surface for players.

“All the best sports grounds in the world use this grass,” he said.

Wickets fall fast in day two of Kata Group International Cricket 7s

11 April 2014

Three wickets fell in the first three overs at day two of the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour (ACST) 11th Annual Phuket International Cricket Week 2014 Kata Group International Cricket 7s.

The Rowdies were bowling tightly and managed to restrict the ACST Sponsors Team to 46 runs. Then the Rowdies from Qatar/Dubai easily made the runs with a solid batting display shown by Charn with 25 not out.

Young Phuket Juniors wicket-keeper Kung took the catch of the day in the second match, claiming Sedgwick International Cricket Club (SICCOS) Craig Lock for a Duck. Nathan Austin hit an impressive six before he was caught on the boundary by Phuket junior Lip. SICCOS won this match comfortably.

Wolfpack’s winning form returned following yesterday’s loss to the Galahs, with Matt Jenkins retiring after 11 balls on 32 runs. Next to the crease was Captain Will Badger who scored two impressive sixes from the first two balls he faced from ACST Sponsors bowler Gary Mathison and a third off Ijhar, to end at 25 not out.

The SICCOS good form continued later in the day with wicket-keeper Nathan Bowie taking a fantastic catch off leg-side dismissing Montagu Bay Sharks Brian Clifford for a Golden Duck. The SICCOS won the match by 14 runs.

The Galah Cricket Club topped off a fantastic day’s play by making a generous donation to the ACST’s Phuket Junior Cricket Development Fund, to be used for local activities and programs which benefit the development of junior cricket in Phuket.

Galah’s President Allan Boyd President said the Club was very proud to support the local children.

“Cricket can take you anywhere and our Club has been fortunate to play cricket in 32 countries,” Mr Boyd said.

“The Galah’s hope that these junior cricketers will get the same opportunity as us to travel and play the game.

“You don’t have to be rich, you just have to save,” Mr Boyd said.

In line with the Friendship through Cricket spirit, the SICCOS donated Australian Cricket Team shirts to the junior cricketers and Jordan “Moose” Ilsley donated his bat to Kung in recognition of his run score of 27 not out.

Wolfpack retain last year’s title to win Kata Group International Cricket 7s

12 April 2014

Australia’s Wolfpack retained their title by winning the 11th Annual Phuket International Cricket Week 2014 Kata Group International Cricket 7s at Republic Phuket Football Ground today.

Captained by Australian Indoor Cricket Team champion Will Badger, the Wolfpack fought back to defeat the Galah Cricket Team, who had been admirable opponents during the Kata 7s.

Wolfpack had defeated Phuket Cricket Week first timers Montagu Bay Sharks from Tasmania Australia to claim a coveted spot in the Cup division final.

In this game Wolfpack’s Matt Jenkins started well by hitting a four to the offside and followed up with other nice shots before retiring on 31.

Scott Maitland who opened with Jenkins hit a magnificent six and formed a formidable partnership of 61 to win the match.

The Galah Cricket Club had defeated Sedwick Cricket International Cricket Club of Sixes (SICCOS) earlier, setting up a rematch from Day 1 where they had beat the Wolfpack.

The Galah’s Matt James hit an unbelievable one-handed six with incredible ease off the bowling of Jordan “Moose” Ilsley.

The Wolfpack got off to a strong start in the Cup final against the Galahs with Matt Jenkins’ first ball getting out Galah’s Peter Dickie for a Golden Duck.

This was followed by David Newham hitting the best shot of the tournament – a big six down the ground off Steve Hancox’s bowling. Newham continued to show outstanding skill with the bat to make 20 runs before being bowled.

Steve Hancox later took a sensational catch on the boundary, diving to safely dismiss Jake Wright. Will Badger limited the Galah’s to only six runs off his over.

Earlier CBBs had won the Bowl division final by defeating the Rowdies by 23 runs. CBB President Bob “Tiny” Phillips bowled tightly in the last over to seal victory for the CBBs. This feat earned Tiny the player of the finals in the Bowl division.

The Wolfpack’s Matt Jenkins took player of the tournament; with Will Badger being presented with the Spirit of Cricket award. Steve Hancox completed the “three-fer” for the Wolfpack when he was announced as the player of the finals in the Cup division.
